30 May 2024, St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda: The small island developing States(SIDS)1 of Palau, Maldives, Fiji, Mauritius, Belize, and the Federated States of Micronesia, joined Singapore and Monaco today in calling for more ambitious action by all nations2to avert the crises of global heating and biodiversity loss by prioritizing the ratification and implementation of the new High Seas Treaty (formally called the BBNJ Agreement).

At the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP15) in 2022, nations committed to protecting at least 30% of the world’s ocean by 2030 as part of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, the minimum scientists say is required to stem the loss of marine life and avoid a collapse of global fisheries.

Following twenty years of campaigning by conservationists and scientists, UN member states finally adopted the High Seas Treaty, the first piece of global legislation to protect life in this vast, unclaimed, space.

Brussels, 24 April 2024: The High Seas Alliance strongly welcomed the European Parliament’s vote in favour of the European Union (EU) ratification of the High Seas Treaty today. Formally known as the United Nations Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ), the Treaty aims to protect marine life in areas beyond countries’ maritime boundaries, which includes the High Seas and the seabed called “The Area”.

Athens, 16 April 2024: TheEuropean Union and the governments of Belgium, Bermuda, Chile, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Republic of Korea, Nigeria, Palau, Philippines and Seychelles called on all nations1 to prioritise the ratification and implementation of the historic High Seas Treaty today, and committed to ensure it swiftly secures the 60 ratifications needed to enter into force. The call also came as Seychelles became the latest country – and the first African nation – to officially ratify the new Treaty today, thereby picking up the pace in the Race for Ratification2.
