Today Greenpeace organized a rally and dance party near the United Nations Headquarters in New York to celebrate the ocean and demand that world governments make history by agreeing a strong high seas treaty during IGC5.
The event included performances by Grag Queen and Hila the Killa, who debuted her new song “Ocean Treaty Anthem” calling for protection of the ocean. Activists and supporters from around the world marched from Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza to the entrance of the UN, demanding greater urgency to ensure a strong treaty is finalized in 2022.

Will McCallum from Greenpeace UK told the High Seas Alliance: “We’re calling for delegates to agree a strong global ocean treaty and we need to do that because billions of people around the world depend on a healthy ocean. Without a decision in the next two weeks, the campaign to protect at least 30% of the ocean by 2030 is put at risk. We have to see an agreement decision now.”
