The Latin American region’s positive leadership has been tangible towards the final phase of the negotiations for a new legally binding BBNJ Treaty.
In this context, High Seas Alliance representatives supported a webinar on capacity building and the transfer of marine technology hosted by Honduras and El Salvador on March 23rd, 2021. HSA provided support towards the organization and experts’ selections, as well as interpreters to facilitate the discussions between the participants and the experts.
The webinar brought together 47 delegates from the 15 countries that are part of the Core Latin American Group (CLAM). The experts that presented include: Alejandra López with the Independent Association of Latin America and the Caribbean (AILAC), Ariel Troisi who is the Chairperson from the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) and Marjo Vierros, the Director of Coastal Policy and Humanities Research in British Columbia, as capacity building expert on behalf of the High Seas Alliance.
The webinar also provided the opportunity to touch base with CLAM on capacity building and marine technology transfer, identifying practical elements and lessons learned on these particular topics from other international forums, the relevance of the effective implementation of this chapter within the BBNJ Treaty; and to answer any questions from delegations.
The Latin American countries’ commitment with the BBNJ negotiating process and the enhancement of national capacities through constructive dialogues are distinctive elements of this region heading towards the fourth session of the Intergovernmental Conference.
