Australian and International NGOs and science experts are collaborating with the Australian Government to advance the establishment of the first generation of High Seas marine protected areas in the Oceania region

Sydney, 9 October 2024: High Seas Alliance, WWF and the Deep Ocean Stewardship Initiative today announced a collaboration with the Australian Government to hold a landmark science and knowledge symposium to map the extraordinary values of the Lord Howe Rise – South Tasman Sea and begin stakeholder discussions about its future management and protection under the High Seas Treaty.

This week marks a significant milestone as the United Nations convenes its first “official” meeting on the High Seas Treaty since its adoption in June last year. From 24-26 June 2024, the Preparatory Commission (PrepCom) will meet in New York to start putting the Treaty into action.

New York, 19 June 2024: A year since the historic High Seas Treaty¹ to protect biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction (BBNJ) was formally adopted by UN Member States² on 19 June 2023, the High Seas Alliance started the one-year countdown to reach the goal of securing the 60 ratifications needed for the Treaty to enter into force by the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in June 2025, France.

Brussels, 24 April 2024: The High Seas Alliance strongly welcomed the European Parliament’s vote in favour of the European Union (EU) ratification of the High Seas Treaty today. Formally known as the United Nations Agreement on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ), the Treaty aims to protect marine life in areas beyond countries’ maritime boundaries, which includes the High Seas and the seabed called “The Area”.

Athens, 16 April 2024: TheEuropean Union and the governments of Belgium, Bermuda, Chile, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Republic of Korea, Nigeria, Palau, Philippines and Seychelles called on all nations¹ to prioritise the ratification and implementation of the historic High Seas Treaty today, and committed to ensure it swiftly secures the 60 ratifications needed to enter into force. The call also came as Seychelles became the latest country – and the first African nation –  to officially ratify the new Treaty today, thereby ​​picking up the pace in the Race for Ratification².
