Yesterday, we hosted a celebratory virtual reception to mark the High Seas Treaty entering into force on 17 January 2026: a truly historic moment for our shared ocean. If you missed it, you can watch the recording below.
This milestone reflects decades of collective effort from governments, negotiators, civil society, and ocean champions around the world, and reminds us that while we’ve reached a turning point, the work continues toward universal ratification and strong implementation.
During the webinar we were honored to hear from an incredible line of speakers and contributors, including:
- Ms. Elinor Hammarskjöld, UN Legal Counsel, delivered opening remarks to mark this landmark moment for ocean governance
- H.E. Surangel Whipps Jr., President of Palau, shared a keynote message spotlighting leadership and ambition for ocean protection
- Lisa Speer, Director of the International Oceans Program at NRDC and one of the HSA founders, reflected on decades of advocacy and the journey that made this Treaty possible, while honouring Kristina Gjerde
- Em The Master, brought the celebration to life through powerful music inspired by the ocean and the Treaty’s momentum
- Solomon Pili Kahoʻohalahala, Indigenous activist, offered a deeply moving cultural tribute from Hawaiʻi through ocean storytelling and chant
- Asha de Vos, marine biologist, shared insights into the extraordinary biodiversity of the High Seas and why protection matters now more than ever
- Ambassador Rena Lee of Singapore, closed with reflections on the Treaty’s negotiation history and what it represents for multilateralism and collective action
- Artist Iris Maertens captured the spirit of the event through live graphic illustration, turning shared words into art (Check it out below!)
- Our Director, Rebecca Hubbard moderated the event and celebrated the milestone with an opening toast, and calling for continued momentum toward global ratification
A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us from around the world to celebrate this milestone, and to honor the memory of Kristina Gjerde, whose dedication helped bring this Treaty to life.
As we look ahead to the critical implementation phase, including preparations for BBNJ PrepCom3 and CoP1, collaboration, inclusivity, transparency, and ambition will be more important than ever.
