As 2024 comes to a close, we’re excited to share with you this wrap-up film highlighting the High Seas Alliance’s key milestones this year in the #RaceForRatification of the High Seas Treaty.
It’s been an incredibly busy and exciting year! 2024 got off to a great start in January with the small island, big ocean state of Palau as the first country off the starting blocks to ratify the Treaty. Since then, countries from every region of the world have stepped up, with 15 nations having officially deposited their instruments of ratification at the United Nations, and more expected to follow soon.
As you can see from the film, High Seas Alliance and its members have been hard at work around the world, championing the Treaty’s importance and the need for its swift ratification. This year, we organized 17 events, hosted 10 workshops, and mobilized governments, civil society and stakeholders across 32 countries through various meetings and events. (No wonder we’re all ready for a short break!).
As we look ahead to the new year, it’s important to take a moment to reflect on our progress, recharge, and from January get ready to move full speed ahead toward the 3rd UN Ocean Conference in June 2025—a pivotal moment to rally global support and secure the 60 ratifications needed for the Treaty to enter into force. Only together, can we drive the change our ocean so urgently needs.
Peace and love!
