Protecting the Ocean We Need - Securing the Future We Want

Paris Peace Forum Announcement

Good news for global governance of the ocean! The High Seas Alliance, a global partnership of 40 environmental NGOs and IUCN, has been selected as one of the 10 projects out of a total of 700 applicants, to be “scaled-up” over the next year through support and advice from the prestigious Paris Peace ForumSpecifically, the Paris Peace Forum will promote HSA’s work to protect the ocean’s immense and unique biodiversity with a binding international governance treaty, currently being negotiated at the UN.

The Forum, an annual meeting that was first convened in 2018 by French President Emmanuel Macron, highlights the work of projects around the world which help solve governance challenges in areas such as peace and security, the environment and development. Submissions come from diverse actors including States, NGOs, companies, religious groups and academic institutions, with the final selected projects receiving mentoring and high-level support to help the projects reach their goals.

High Seas Alliance Coordinator Peggy Kalas who participated in the Forum said:

“The High Seas Alliance is honored to be selected among so many deserving projects undertaking critical work to address global challenges. The support that the Paris Peace Forum will provide us to “scale up” our work in securing a robust treaty in 2020 comes at the most opportune time, as we are only months away from a final negotiating session.”
